Further to the launch of Lord Darzi’s independent review of the NHS, Londonwide LMCs’ CEO and Deputy CEO have issued the following response:
“After suffering years of neglect from successive administrations, we were happy to share with Lord Darzi evidence of the concerns and challenges GPs and their staff in the Capital struggle with each and every day. And it is heartening to see much of that reflected in his final, honest, independent report.
“We need an honest conversation about what can be delivered safely in general practice and community-based healthcare with the available resources. Whilst reform can be a part of that conversation, patients and general practice staff don’t have years to allow long term plans to come to fruition. The devil is in the detail and we look forward to being part of those open and transparent discussions about what happens next.
“Family doctors need help. We call on the Government to take onboard Lord Darzi’s renewed support for family doctors and their practices, providing continuity of care within local communities; and to focus on what is safe and clinically appropriate provision for both patients and their GPs.
“Ministers need to allow GPs, GPNs and the rest of the core practice team to do the jobs we have trained for over many years – caring for patients holistically, partnered by professionals across the health and social care sector. And to free-up practices from constraints which distract professionals from caring for patients in the most effective way, as demand, complexity and inequalities increase.”
