At the Budget on 30 October 2024 it was announced that employer National Insurance will rise by 1.2%. NHS and other public sector organisations are exempted from this rise, with the Treasury subsequently confirming GP practices and other contractors to the public sector are expected to pay it. As yet no additional funding into the GP contract has been allocated to reimburse the cost of doing this.
As the national representative body, the BMA is campaigning for the employer NI rise to be funded so practices do not have to make savings by reducing patient care.
The following BMA resources may be useful to practices:
- Main campaign page
- NI calculator (behind member login)
- MP contact tool
- Letter to Treasury
- Briefing for members
- Article in The Doctor outlining the BMA’s concerns
Collective action
The BMA’s campaign of collective action in dispute of the imposed 2023/24 GP contract remains ongoing. GP partner members of the BMA are encouraged to respond to the surveys on participation that are regularly emailed and texted out.
Call for participation in campaign resources
Rebuild GP, the campaign team funded by the General Practitioners Defence Fund, are looking for GPs to provide short video clips for a new series launching in December. The campaign team can give a more detailed briefing to participants upon request and anyone interested in participating should contact them via [email protected] for a full information pack before filming a clip of themselves.
The questions Rebuild GP are asking GPs to answer in simple, easily understood language are:
- What is a GP?
- How do GPs support patients?
- What challenges do GPs face?
- How are you being affected?
- Why is the role of a GP important?
- How can the Government better support GPs?
- What does a GP’s day look like?
- How can patients better support GPs?
