Aspiring to partnership programme

  • Latest news

Londonwide LMCs' brand-new course offers tailored training for those who are interested in becoming a partner in general practice.

This modular programme has been developed to help aspiring partners understand and be better prepared for the challenges associated with this rewarding career choice.

The overall aim is to provide an understanding of the commissioning and regulatory framework in which practices operate nationally and locally, as well as gain the knowledge and skills required to effectively run the GP practice as a small business.

Modules

It is a six module programme, with delegates choosing to attend the sessions that best meet their learning needs, or they can attend all six sessions if they wish.

The modules are:

  1. GP regulation and NHS England
  2. Practice finance
  3. Practice development
  4. Practice premises
  5. Due diligence and partnership agreements
  6. Team leadership and HR

GP training schemes are three-year programmes that develop the knowledge skills and attributes that doctors have gained throughout their medical school and foundation school training to enable them to become independent practitioners, with the ability to consult patients with undifferentiated problems. On completion of training, GPs tend to follow one of three career paths, either as a sessional GP, salaried GP or GP partner. At different stages of their career a GP may work under any one of these structures.

For GPs considering becoming GP partners additional training is required to provide them with the knowledge, skills and attributes to manage a small business.

We have developed this modular course to assist GPs and other clinical and non-clinical staff in developing their management and leadership skills. The course covers the essential knowledge, skills and attributes required of a general practice leader to enable them to work successfully as leaders in practice and as leaders in the wider healthcare environment.

Interactive and group learning

The programme has been developed by experienced GPs, including GP partners, accomplished practice managers and experts in specific field so that it is tailored specifically to general practice. It is composed of five interactive half-day virtual sessions (we can provide flexibility on delivery timelines) using the Zoom platform. Delegates will need to have working cameras and microphones to be able to be active in the sessions. They are not webinars, and therefore require delegate participation to enable attendees to fully benefit from the valuable training provided. The final module is a half day face to face session. Please note this can be run in a local area if commissioned.

Due to the nature of the virtual sessions, we allow a maximum number of 30 delegates per session. This helps to ensure the sessions are an intimate, interactive, confidential and safe environment.

What delegates say so far

  • “A highlight was meeting members of Londonwide and knowing that we can reach out and connect.”
  • “Excellent presenter, kept engaged despite a very heavy topic, but really well taught and learnt a lot.”
  • “As always, a well delivered, engaging and truly helpful session.”
  • “A highlight was a clearer understanding of financial matters pertaining to partnership.”

The first cohort was commissioned by the North East London Training Hub, starting in May 2023 and is due to conclude in October.
